How to change the upholstery of the sofa with your own hands (Diy) / Furniture / SECOND STREET

I propose to get acquainted with my monster sofa. This is a very common model, in my opinion, it is convenient, but there is a nuance - upholstery. We wanted light skin, but by chance, eco-leather was chosen in a fashionable way, but in fact dermantine... Everything was fine for about a year and a half, and then cracks went, these cracks grew into small holes, and then... Alas and ah. So, the photo of the victim: target="_blank" name="cut" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">
Changing the sofa was not part of our budget, but it was simply impossible to continue living like that. I decided to change the upholstery and replace the pillows (these are too hard) with the usual ones: either a feather or a synthetic winterizer. I advise you to choose dense synthetic winterizer for these purposes - they keep their shape well, do not settle.
I’ll partially change the upholstery, I won’t touch the frame myself, because the material is in good shape, plus it is well washed. Will go under the shift: 2 stationary parts of the sofa and one part retractable. Those stationary, with a screed, I will leave it, but I will do it with buttons (I have long wanted). Regarding the choice of material for upholstery: in principle, you can use the usual fabric you like, but still I advise you to take the upholstery, it is much denser and it has higher wear resistance, which is important in the case of a sofa. I chose chenille for the base and jacquard chenille for decorative pillows. Sometimes they are found in ordinary fabric stores, but it is better to contact professional stores. There is a huge selection for every taste. Prices are very different, I advise you to pay attention to the "remnants", in many stores there is a measured flap, where you can buy great materials at bargain prices. These “remnants” are of rather large sizes (for example, one of the offered pieces of my fabric was 21.5 m). The fabric that I liked was worth 300 r / meter, width 140. Here it is:
So, for work we need:
- a furniture stapler (I have the most ordinary one, it costs about 600 rubles);
- staples for a stapler (6 mm seemed small to me, and 12 too large, so I took 8 mm), 150 rubles / 1000 pcs.;
- sewing machine;
- Upholstery fabric (took 9.5 meters, together with the delivery of 3200 rubles);
- threads No. 20;
- zippers on pillows;
- scissors;
- marker;
- a tool to remove old staples (I used a screwdriver and pliers);
- pins;
- buttons (at your discretion, a tight “leg” is required);
- cord for screed (I used waxed).
To start, we disassemble the sofa:
I have 3 seats. Two with a coupler, one of which is L-shaped with an internal angle, the second is rectangular, and the third is rectangular without a coupler that extends (with a handle). We start with a rectangular with ties. We remove the material with which the inside is closed, cut off the old screed and remove the old upholstery:

Next, we make the necessary measurements and cut out the desired piece of fabric (in length: pillow length + pillow height * 2, similarly in width) with an allowance of at least 5 cm on each side. We place the fabric on the floor face down, on top of it we put part of our sofa. It is necessary to decide how to handle the corners. Or by folding:

Or we will build up. I will scribble, because if the corners are made by folding, I have a thought about working in haste, it looks somehow... Not so shorter. And these bends of fabric are a hotbed for any "evil spirits".
In order to do everything carefully, I act like this: lay the fabric on the floor, cushion on top, bend the fabric and fasten it with masking tape so that the corners remain outside:

Then I take the ruler, leaning it on the floor, I lean it against the sofa on both sides of the corner and make notches from the inside out:
Based on these notches, we draw a rectangle and combining the drawn lines, cleave them:

It’s better to peel along the line (I forgot to take a picture) so that you can try on or sweep along it.
Try on:
It is important that during fitting, the fabric is worn with little effort. If all is well, go scribble the corners. My line runs 5 mm from the intended line in the direction of decreasing the upholstery, this is necessary so that the fabric sits tight and the corners do not "run away" during subsequent tension. I did a straight line, so that later the corners turned out to be slightly soft, or you can round the ends a little (just a little, not more than a couple of centimeters down from the corner).
We try on, cut off the excess (I cut along the already drawn line, we get wonderful blanks for patchwork :)
Next, you need to stretch the cord with buttons. On the front side of the upholstery we make marks where the buttons will be:
Initially, I had holes in the foam rubber for the screed, but I didn’t have so many long needles, so I used ordinary tubes as assistants. We put the pillow on its side and insert the tubes into the holes:
For convenience, then it is better to shorten them so that they stick out a little from the sofa on both sides.
I have 5 lines of 3 buttons each. I advise you to do the minimum number of buttons per piece of rope - so the tension will be better. We fasten the cord to the frame with a zigzag (we do not regret the staples) and begin to make a screed. I advise you to start from the middle line, then the line above and above, then turn the pillow over and move the same way from the farthest to the nearest line. Unfortunately, there is no photo of the process, because 2 hands are needed (and even better if there is an assistant), but everything is quite simple: we push the needle with the cord on the bottom of the pillow (pictured above) through the tube through the foam, remove the needle, pierce the fabric at the mark, put on the button, and draw the needle in the opposite direction, shift the tube along the cord and cut it off, then into the next tube and so on in order. When we finished the row, we pull it well so that the buttons “drown” a little, helping ourselves to “drown” them on the front side, while making sure that they “sink” evenly. A number of completed, secured as a zig-zag. Repeat the desired number of times and get:
Next, we begin to stretch the material (first, the long sides) and see how the situation changes before our eyes:

Here only one side is stretched in the photo. First, we fix the fabric along the line of buttons with a furniture stapler, and then, if everything suits us, we can fix it around the perimeter. When tensioning, keep in mind that the fabric must be tensioned very strongly and evenly (so that the foam does not “squeeze”). Look at the previous one in the photo - the first two lines along the buttons are stretched well, but the next 3 are tightened (instead of the line, we get a plane). If this happens - you need to slightly relax the tension.
We walk around the perimeter and get:
Turn over face down, cover the back side with a cloth, place the staples close enough. I did not take pictures, I think everything is clear.
Next in line is the sliding part. "Undress" her. Mine has a small “step” for fixing when parsing the sofa and a slight rounding under the handle.

We cut / stitch in the order already described, before fixing with a stapler we cut the fabric in the region of this rounding and fix:

Next, we process the "step":

And fix the stapler.
Next, we stretch and fix the fabric around the perimeter.
For the handle you need a piece 60-70cm long and 15 wide (wider / narrower, as you prefer). Fold the edges to the center along the handle:
Then fold it in half lengthwise and build as close to the edge as possible. We fix the handle in its place, we do not regret the staples.
We get the following result:

We fix everything well with a stapler. Close the back side.
The last pillow with an inner corner. We place it on the fabric, draw and cut the fabric without this angle (be sure to leave an allowance of 2 cm.):
We cut another rectangle with a length equal to the sum of the lengths of two sides of the angle + 2 cm per seam on each side, and in width - the height of the pillow + 2 cm per seam + 5 cm per stretch (I did not measure the width, because I had a narrow and a long residue, then, after fixing, cut off all unnecessary). Sew on. It turns out like this:
Further, according to an already familiar pattern: the corners (for the inner corner, the fabric must be cut, as in the description of the hole for the handle), fitting, screed with buttons, tension, fastening). When pulling, we start from the inner corner, so that the seam “descends” and subsequently it is not visible.
I made decorative pillows with dimensions 68 * 68 (cut squares 70 * 70 cm), with zippers. 3 pieces from companion fabrics, and 2 from the main.
I will not describe the process - and so everything is clear)
We collect our sofa and get:

What I would like to pay special attention to:
1. Before pulling, be sure to align the stitches of the yarn so that they fall on the corners of the sofa.
2. For the first time, it is better to choose a fabric without a pattern, so as not to pull it, but even if there is no pattern, keep an eye on the fibers of the fabric under tension.
3. During the tension, be sure to iron the fabric with your hand from the center of the part to its edge to remove all the "excess", these "excess" make the work very sloppy.
4. Regarding buttons: the tension can be easily checked - sit on the finished pillow, if the nearest button is “laid” on the fabric, then you need to apply more forces. With a good screed, the buttons do not come out, but remain tightly seated.
The most important thing is that they’re not afraid, but simply take and do :) Everything will surely work out! Good luck in your work!
