So let’s check ’em out!
21 Latest Chick Flicks/ Romance Movies to Watch Right Now
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
This is the #1 among the latest chick flicks that every girl needs to catch up on. This film made star Noah Centineo an overnight sensation with his role of the cute jock/boyfriend, and he got the title of the “Internet’s Boyfriend”. Honestly, you’ll fall in love with him if you haven’t already! This movie was one of the best chick flicks of 2018, but in my opinion, TATBILB is also one of the best chick flicks of all time.
Lara Jean is your average high school introverted and invisible girl. She writes 5 love letters to her crushes, but to her horror, someone anonymously delivers them. This teenage romance movie has everyone hooked, and we all want a TV series so it can be soooo much longer. After the success of this movie, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before 2 is also under works, and the same cast is returning.
What’s Your Number
OMG what can I say about this movie other than it totally made me have a crush on Chris Evans, if I didn’t already love Captain America! It just showed me a relatable, romantic, cute side of him. Aww! What’s Your number is a silly time pass movie, predictable and nothing too groundbreaking. Just the characters and its simplicity will make it worth the while.
After Ally’s maybe-boyfriend breaks up with her, she finds out that women who have had more than 20 lovers have difficulty finding their true love. So she decides to find and her 19 or so exes before she hooks up with anyone ever again. A bad boy neighbor helps her find these past lovers as she rediscovers her past, both good and bad.
Sierra Burgess is a Loser
A coming of age movie, this Netflix high school rom-dram is a fun watch. Also starring hottie Noah Centineo, Sierra Burgess is one of the modern chick flick movies of 2018, dealing with issues like body image and catfishing.
Sierra, the protagonist, is a teenager who starts a relationship over the phone with her high school crush after he mistakenly texts her. Sometimes plain annoying and sometimes heartwarming, this is one of the must-watch teenage drama movies and one of the best high school movies on Netflix.
Kissing Booth
One of the most talked-about teenage drama movies on Netflix, Kissing Booth is a cute, coming-of-age movie about high school crushes and friendships. Elle and Lee have been raised like twins and have been best friends since birth. Strict rules dominate their friendship, one of which says that relatives of each other are off limits, romantically speaking. Their friendship gets risked when Elle falls for Lee’s older brother Noah, who’s a popular boy hottie.
Honestly, I didn’t like Noah the boyfriend’s character so much, and it’s been sparking controversies among the viewers online. Either way, Kissing Booth 2 is officially on the way, and that means tons of people love this movie! It’s a good watch anyway when you’re on your Netflix browse.
Princess Switch
Classic princess story involving a poor-ish girl with princess lessons and sort of makeover, with a prince and falling in love, Princess Switch has just a subtle twist. Vanessa Hudgens plays a dutchess, who is engaged to marry a prince, but when she meets her lookalike, an American baker, she switches places with her to experience a “normal life”. This lovely Christmas movie is predictable, sweet, fun and totally imperfect! With its many flaws, it won’t become a classic, but it’s certainly one of the best girl movies on Netflix.
Ocean’s 8
The Ocean’s 11 franchise has always been a boys’ club. But in the era of gender equality, there had to be a gang of criminal ladies making a cool new strategy for heist – of a diamond necklace at the most fashionable night of the year – the Met Gala. Starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna, the chick flick has an all star cast, and promised to be a memorable one. But it kinda disappointed.
Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s younger sister, and decides to commit a heist in her newly paroled life. She puts together a team of a hacker, jewelry maker and fashion designer, all so they can dress a movie star, played by Hathaway, in an exclusive $150 million Cartier necklace, which they plan to steal the night of the Met ball. Packed with fashion, glamour, crime, and humor – this is certainly one of the watchable latest chick flicks, although neither one of the best nor memorable.
5 Feet Apart
Based on a true story, this is one of the latest chick flicks that’s been getting a lot of attention lately. Starring Riverdale star Cole Sprouse, 5 Feet Apart is about two young patients with cystic fibrosis, who fall for each other despite knowing they can’t ever touch each other, since their getting infections from other CF patients can be life-threatening.
As their relationship grows, they seriously wonder if life is worth living without hugs, touch or literal closeness. Everything becomes more complicated doctors find cure for one of them as the other needs to make a tough decision. Heart-wrenching and sad, this story is definitely not my idea of a sleepover movie, but it’s one of the teenage movies of 2019 to have on your list.
Isn’t It Romantic
Extremely cute and hilarious, this is one of the best movies on Netflix. Starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth and Priyanka Chopra, this one’s about a shoddily dressed woman who doesn’t believe in love or miracles or romantic movies. Until she hits her head and finds herself stuck in a romantic comedy, with herself as a leading lady.
Strewn with the quintessential rom-com tropes, Isn’t It Romantic makes fun of all of these elements, such as a typical gay best friend, a jealous colleague, a best friend you don’t know you have feelings for and a hot man. This movie is a very self-aware rom-com, which pokes at itself and that’s why it appeals to both rom-com lovers and haters! I loved it, it was nothing too awesome but kinda predictable and silly! It’s one of the best chick flicks 2019 has to offer.
What Men Want
The new, gender-reversed version of the 2000 movie, What Women Want, this is one of the latest chick flicks to watch these days. Ali, a victim of sexism in the corporate world, wonders what she needs to do to get a well-deserved promotion. She accidentally gets the power to hear what men are thinking, but will trying to be a part of the boys’ club prove to be too much? Or will it be worth it? What all will it cost her?
Aladdin
Disney’s live action remake of our childhood favorite Aladdin promises to be everything the next generation has missed out on – the funny genie played by Will Smith, and a cast of middle eastern Jasmine and Aladdin played by hottie Mena Massoud. Big budget movie directed by Guy Ritchie, this one looks great in the promos, and definitely deserves to be in the list of chick flick romantic comedy films.
Personally, I’m not in the need of a remake of the original Aladdin movie, but this can be one of the latest chick flicks to catch up on this year. For those who don’t know, Aladdin is a poor thief of Agrabah, who falls in love with a princess. Bad guy Jafar sends him to a magical cave where he finds a lamp with a genie who’ll grant him three wishes. To impress his lady-love Jasmine, he asks to become a prince. But will find true love born out of a lie? And what’ll happen when Jafar wants Jasmine for himself?
The Perfect Date
One of best high school movies on Netflix, The Perfect Date stars Noah Centineo of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before fame, and Camila Mendes of Riverdale fame. One of the super cute teenage movies on Netflix, this movie is very relatable. It is about finding your true self, as one tries to do while writing a college essay. When all the buzz-words fail, a high school student Brooks, decides to make an app to offer his services as a chaperone to young women looking for a date. Plus, it’ll help the poor guy save up for his dream school, Yale. I know! Who ever wants to go to Yale?! That’s right, only those who can’t dream of going to Harvard!
Jokes apart, through his app, clients can pick the personality of their perfect date, and Brooks can become whatever they want. Until he meets the girl of his dreams, and wonders if real feelings will clash with a fake persona. This definitely one of the cutest latest chick flicks movies of 2019.
Friend Zone
This one is on my watch list, as I’ve heard it’s one of the cutest teenage movies on Netflix. As the name suggests, this one explores the age-old topic – how to take your friendship to the next level, a.k.a. the friend zone. Palm and Gink have been best friends for 10 years, and Palm has been harboring feelings for her since high school. He does, at one point, try to take things to the love-level during high school, but he realizes Gink wants to just stay friends.
Now, years later, both have their fair share of loves and relationships, and they also have each other to fall back on during their heartbreaks. But now, Palm faces this dilemma once again, this time for real, as he has to decide whether he should try becoming more than friends and risk losing the precious friendship, or keep things the way they are. Sounds predictable, but you know we’ll still watch it! <3
Crazy Rich Asians
If you love glam, luxury and travel, this is one of the latest chick flicks you should catch up on. With an all Asian cast and lots of high fashion, this rom com already has a sequel and TV series based on it under way. The movie stars Constance Wu and hottie Henry Golding (of a Simple Favor fame).
It follows the story of Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor, who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young to meet his family. She is shocked to discover they are quite wealthy, as people around her tell her she may never measure up. The whole movie spends time around Singaporean monuments and honestly, seems like an ad for the tourism-loving country!
A Simple Favor
Starring Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick and Henry Golding, this is movie is no rom com. It’s a mystery thriller film, but one of the latest chick flicks nonetheless. Anna Kendrick plays a YouTube mommy vlogger, Stephanie, who befriends a rick woman named Emily, played by Blake Lively, with a seemingly perfect life, as their kids meet at kindergarten. When Emily disappears mysteriously, leaving Stephanie, in charge of her child, a series of odd events happen, making her question everything.
As Stephanie realizes she barely knew the woman she considered to be her BFF, she finds herself getting involved deeper and deeper in the mystery of Emily’s disappearance. And she’s at the verge of discovering things she may not have wanted to know. Will she back out of the craziness? Or will she participate in it?
Second Act
Starring Jennifer Lopez, this romantic comedy is one of the latest chick flicks from 2018. One of the very few movies that revolve around the career of a working woman, this one is surely on my watch-list. Maya works at a Value Shop store, but despite her hard work and dedication, is passed up for a promotion to the managerial position, because she doesn’t have a college degree. And that changes when one other friends creates a fake resume and a chance at her dream job seems closer than ever…
La la Land
This musical blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, this is a story about two people, a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress, who begin a relationship based on the common passion of chasing their dreams in LA. But as the story unfolds and their dreams start realizing, their love begins to change too. Will a relationship that was formed out of dreams still stay the same when those dreams come true? Slow paced and musical, this is one of the latest chick flicks that’s been on everyone’s watch-list since it was released in 2016.
Passengers
A sci-fi movie, this one is on our list of the latest chick flicks but it’s not really a romantic comedy movie or even an entirely girly movie. But you’ll like it anyway, if you love sci-fi. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, Passengers is a movie about romance in the strangest of places. A spaceship is transporting people to another planet, all asleep in hibernation pods.
Due to a malfunction, Jim wakes up about 90 years too early, realizing that he’ll never be able to live long enough to reach the destination, or ever talk to another human being. And just on the brink of giving up due to loneliness and loss of purpose, he decides to wake up fellow-passenger, Aurora.
If he does so, she’ll be forced to live her life on the spaceship, too, without ever being able to reach the destination planet. And she’ll never be able to communicate with anyone else other than him. Do his deadly circumstances justify putting someone else unwillingly in the same situation as his? Will their relationship survive all this? Will she be able to forgive him?
Mother’s Day
With an ensemble cast including Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson, this movie is about the relationships of a group of women with their mothers. The women are mothers themselves, whose lives have their own set of issues, and their stories are intertwined.
Age of Adaline
A Blake Lively movie with hotties Michiel Huisman and Harrison Ford, this is one of the cute latest chick flicks to check out if you haven’t already done so. After an injury to her head, Adaline stops ageing and is forced to constantly be on the move for her safety, lest she’ll be forced to reveal her secret. But it all changes when she finally meets someone she can’t resist. And just as she is wondering whether or not to reveal her truth, something from her past comes up that forces its revelation.
Set over a period of 90 years, this movie features a full evolution of fashion, no wonder Blake Lively agreed to do it! Check it all out in my article: 100 Years of Fashion – Blake Lively in The Age of Adaline.
Cinderella
The live action remake of Disney’s classic fairy tale – this one needs no introduction. Ella the Cinderella is left to live in a poor condition, constantly berated and troubled by her evil stepsisters and stepmother. She dreams of going to the royal ball at the palace, where she dreams of meeting a handsome Prince Charming. Blah blah blah, long story short, she gets a makeover and wears a pretty gown and glass slippers. Will her dreams come true? Sure, ’cause this is Cinde-f**king-rella.
Set It Up
Here’s one in the list of new funny chick flicks this year. It’s about bad bosses who have no lives and therefore expect everyone working for them to also be as workaholic as them. I’m sure that’s a familiar phenomenon to everyone… at least I can relate to it one hundred percent!
25-year-old Harper is the assistant to Kirsten, who is the editor of a digital online sports media company. 28 year-old Charlie works for a big-time venture capitalist Rick, in the same building as Harper. When they meet during their bosses’ night-time dinner run, they realize both their bosses have no social lives. So to get more free time for themselves, they decide to set up their bosses with each other.
Before We Go
I don’t know what could be more reason to watch a movie than Chris Evans, one of our top male celebrity crushes right now! But this movie has more reasons, too. It also stars Alice Eve of She’s Out of My League fame, and is even directed by Chris Evans.
This movie is about a girl and a guy who meet for one night during tough circumstances and get to know each other through a series of events that unfold. Poor guy Nick meets Brooke at the Grand Central after she misses her train. Brooke tells him she got robbed, but needs to be in Boston to meet her husband by morning. Nick tries to help her catch a cab but his credit card is declined. What’s left to find out is how their story unfolds, does she really have a husband, and if so, does she love him, or will she fall for the stranger? And I for one am quite excited to find out what their deal is going to be…
So I hope my list of latest chick flicks was helpful. Which of these movies have you already watched and which did you like the best? And which one did you hate? Let me know in the comments below or by tweeting me @shilpa1ahuja!
