BodyKey recipe: Banana smoothie flavored with almond, coconut
The combination of bananas, almonds and coconut make this smoothie recipe sound like a decadent dessert, but it’s loaded with nutrients and can take the place of any meal when you’re in a rush.
Plus, it’s a great way to use those overripe bananas.
Banana nutrition facts
Bananas are a great smoothie ingredient because they can be used just ripe or overripe. They make any smoothie extra creamy, and if they’re frozen you get some added thickness, too.
But bananas also deliver nutrients. They are rich in potassium, fiber, vitamin C and vitamin B6, which all support your heart health. Along with other pale colored fruits and vegetables, they also deliver phytonutrients that benefit your bones, circulatory health and arterial function.
Can you add nuts to smoothies?
You may think adding nuts to smoothies will result in an unpleasant gritty texture. Blending them well or using a food processor prevents this. After all, peanut butter, almond butter and other nut butters are essentially blended nuts.
But using real nuts is preferred over store bought butters, because those can have added oils, sugars or other unwanted ingredients.
If you’re worried your blender can’t do the job, make it easier by soaking them in warm water for at least an hour or overnight to ease the blending process. This recipe calls for already sliced almonds, which will also help.
