Anyone who’s arrived work or school after a bad night’s sleep has been the recipient of a barrage of questions. If you don’t want to face those questions, makeup may be the answer. Most people wear at least a little bit of makeup every day, but you can use it to transform your face entirely. For a rested look, try these tricks when you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep.

1. Use Moisturizer Instead of Foundation

Foundation can sometimes perform poorly on tired skin because it’s often more rough and uneven than well-rested skin. It’s liable to crack more easily or look thick and powdery. Instead of using foundation, use a tinted moisturizer, which will help reduce redness and restore some brightness to your face. If you don’t own a tinted moisturizer, mix a few drops of foundation with your moisturizer to create one.

2. Use a White or Nude Liner for Your Waterline

Lining the top and bottom lashes with black can make your eyes look small, and may actually increase the tired look that you’re trying to avoid. Instead, line the top lash as usual, but line your waterline with white or nude eyeliner. It’ll open up your eyes and give them a brightness that makes you look more alert.

3. Skip the Flashy Eye Makeup

Although it’s tempting to layer on makeup to cover up tired eyes, that’s not a great idea. You won’t be able to cover the tiredness entirely, and flashy makeup is likely to pull attention to your eyes. Go for a nude eyeshadow without any glitter, and then do some light eyeliner. You’re more likely to be able to fly under the radar if you make your eyes look understated.

4. Go for a Bright Lipstick

Follow up your gentle eye makeup look with a bold and eye-catching lipstick. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your brightest red lipstick or you’ve decided to branch out into nontraditional colors such as blue and green. Drawing attention to your lips is one of the best ways to make tired skin and eyes fade a bit. Plus, it’s impressive; it makes it seem like you’ve put a lot of effort into your makeup without having to do much except pick out the right shade.

5. Curl Your Eyelashes

When you curl your eyelashes, you open the eye up a bit, making it seem bigger and less tired. Smaller eyes tend to look more tired even when you’re fully rested, and that means it goes double when you didn’t sleep very well. The way your eyelashes curl away from your eyes can be a great way to make you look more wide-eyed. You can also enhance this effect a bit with fake lashes, but make sure you don’t go too far. You want to be able to fool people who give your face a quick once-over, not draw attention to your eyes.

6. Grab a Bright Blush

Blush is crucial when it comes to giving your look a bit of an extra boost. Your skin’s likely to be darker and more grey-toned, so blush will help you bring life back to your skin. Once your makeup is complete, do your blush as normal. Then, grab a brighter shade of blush and carefully add a light dusting of that shade on the apples of your cheeks. It’ll liven things up when you need more than your everyday boost.

7. Add Red Lipstick Under Your Concealer

When you think of color correction, you probably don’t think about lipstick, but that’s exactly where you should turn if you’re dealing with dark circles under your eyes. Put a little bit of red lipstick on a makeup sponge and dot it under your eyes until it’s completely blended in. Then, do your concealer as normal and finish it off with your tinted moisturizer. The blend of reds in your lipstick will cancel out the dark tones, and you’ll get a much evener skin tone than you would with mere concealer.

Conclusion

Makeup can work wonders, and that wonder extends even to making you look less fatigued after a night of less-than-optimal sleep. You don’t have to do your makeup as normal when you’re running on a few hours of sleep and a cup of coffee.
