- The U.S. women's national soccer team just beat the Netherlands to take home the Women's World Cup title.
- People, including celebs, are freaking out about the win on social media.
Let's take a moment to talk about sports, 'cause today was a BIG day for the United States women’s soccer team, who won the Women's World Cup earlier this afternoon when they beat the Netherlands, 2-0, in a game in Lyon, France. FYI, this is the U.S. team's FOURTH Women's World Cup title overall (and there have only been eight of these Women's World Cup tournaments) as well as their second straight World Cup title in a row, so yeah, it's something to brag about.
Just like us mere mortals, celebs have also been keeping up with the FIFA tournament and cheering on the U.S. women's team. So obviously they took to social media to congratulate Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Rose Lavelle, and the rest of the team when they were named champions.
Celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Niall Horan, Serena Williams, Hailey Baldwin, and Jessica Chastain showed their support for Team USA on Twitter and Instagram:
While other celebs took the opportunity to support the team in their fight for equal pay. Some background for those of you who don't know: The women's team filed a class action, gender discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation (their employer) earlier this year, partially because they are paid less than the U.S. men's soccer team (who have never won a single World Cup, btw). And according to the New York Times, when the U.S. won, the pro-American crowd at the game began chanting “Equal Pay!”
Anyways, equal pay was exactly what was on these celebs' minds when they reacted to the win:
Congrats to this awesome team! And U.S. Soccer Federation—pay these women!
