"Game of Thrones: The Last Watch" Shows Emilia Clarke's Emotional Goodbye to Daenerys
We’re still in the process of saying goodbye to Game of Thrones, the HBO series that captivated the world and had Twitter abuzz every Sunday night. The show ended on Sunday, May 22, but a new documentary called The Last Watch is giving GoT fans one more chance to relive the series. The documentary, which first aired one week after the finale follows all the action around the final season, including some pretty emotional moments from the lead actors as they said goodbye to their characters.
Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, had a particularly poignant moment bidding farewell to Dany while in her trailer; getting the signature Dany platinum wig and braids put on for the final time. "There’s so many people involved in this — it’s people’s everything," she says in the clip. "It’s kind of exciting to think, 'Oh, who am I without this?'" After filming her final scene, she heads back to her trailer to discover that someone has written “Goodbye Dany, Hello Emilia” on her mirror. Dany may not have taken the Iron Throne to reign over Winterfell, but she definitely made an enormous impact on Emilia.
After the final episode, Emilia shared a heartfelt Instagram post saying goodbye and discussing what GoT and Dany meant to her. “The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life. This woman has taken up the whole of my heart,” she wrote. “I’ve sweated in the blaze of dragon fire, shed many tears at those who left our family early, and wrung my brain dry trying to do Khaleesi and the masterful words, actions (and names) I was given, justice.”
Emilia’s final day isn’t the only devastating and emotional moment in the documentary; when Kit Harrington discovers Jon Snow is responsible for Daenerys’s death, he reacts with true shock and mixed emotions; and when he says goodbye to his own iconic character, he begins to cry. “I feel like my heart is breaking," he says in the doc. "I love this show more than anything. It has never been a job for me, it has been my life. This will always be the greatest thing I’ll ever do and be a part of.”
Emotions ran high for fans, too, who took to Twitter to share their heartbreak over the documentary. “Seeing how emotional Emilia Clarke was in her last day of shooting broke me,” wrote one fan. “Emilia's last day. I'm a wreck,” added another. “Watching Emilia Clarke & Kit Harington’s last day on set of Game of Thrones actually broke my heart, thank you so much for your years of dedication we love you,” yet another tweeted, saying what we’re all feeling even a week after the finale.
While Game of Thrones may be over, it’s pretty clear from the documentary that the show deeply touched its creators, actors, crew, and most of all, its fans. And at least, in this era of streaming, there’s no such thing as goodbye; if you already miss the battles, the dragons, the death scenes, and the drama, it’s as easy as queuing up your HBO account to revisit the glory of GoT once more.
