LimeLife by Alcone Review

I first heard about LimeLife by Alcone at The Makeup Show. James Vincent (a makeup artist I really respect ) spoke about them and one of the founders, Madison Mallardi, spoke in a keynote later that day. I really liked their vibe and wondered why I’d never heard of it before.

The way LimeLife by Alcone came about is kinda cool. Alcone Company opened in 1950 as a pharmacy that also sold makeup to Broadway perfomers. It’s been an institution for NYC MUAs ever since. Makeup artists were constantly referring their clients to the Alcone store and they wanted to find a way to compensate them for it. So, what they did was take their top-selling products and have those pro brands manufacture them for Alcone. They are then branded as LimeLife. The formulas are the exact same. Here is the breakdown of what is what for my makeup artist friends or makeup-obsessed:

I got to know a little more about LimeLife by Alcone when I worked on This story for More. com. The Beauty Guide I interviewed, Danielle, was one of my favorites and I really enjoyed getting to know her and more about the company. She was not spammy, robotic, annoying or creepy.

Fast forward to a month or so ago, I saw that celebrity makeup artist Lottie was doing a collaboration with none other than LimeLife. Lottie is amazing, working on campaigns for Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever and Tarte, just to name a few. Her background is similar to mine (former graphic designer), and I love her style. Knowing that she was putting her name on LimeLife by Alcone products piqued my interest even more and assured me that it must be the real deal.I have been trying out LimeLife products for awhile now, using them on clients and myself. As with any product I try, I remain picky, jaded, skeptical, obsessive and always seeking to determine one simple thing: do I recommend it?

I think you’ll see that I’m not the norm as I’m not going to tell you that I am obsessssssed with everythiiiiing. I purchased all of these with my own cash money and I’ll never talk to you like anything other than a friend.

WHAT I THOUGHT

Rating System: Love, Like, Meh or Nope

Botanical Foundation: LOVE

I already knew I loved this because it’s RCMA, my forever favorite. If you want to wear the same foundation that Kim K, Ariana Grande, J Lo and Beyonce wear, here ya go. It has 50% pigment but can be worn as a tinted moisturizer all the way up to a concealer. I apply with a damp beautyblender or LimeLife’s Blenderful sponge and it’s the most beautiful, realistic coverage that looks and photographs like real skin. There’s about 20 reasons why it’s the only foundation I carry in my freelance kit and why my Most-viewed YouTube video is about it.

Waterproof Complete Concealer: LIKE

This is the most opaque, full coverage concealer I’ve ever tried. It really is totally waterproof too; I tested it! It’s excellent for covering tattoos, melasma, hyperpigmenation and birth marks. 2 warnings though: it has an old lady scent at first (it fades away) and creases when used on the under eye area for me. Kevyn Aucoin made this formula popular when he famously used it as foundation. The coverage is supreme so you could even skip foundation all together.

Perfect Eyeshadow: LOVE

Hands down, the most pigmented eyeshadows I’ve ever tried, and that’s saying a lot. I love that you can create custom refillable palettes, use them wet or dry and as brow powders. If I could compare them to anything, I would compare them to LORAC Pro shadows, but believe it or not, they are more pigmented still. I am planning a separate post on these with swatches.

Perfect Blush: LIKE

While I wish there were more than 2 matte colors, these are mega pigmented and the pan sizes are huge so it will last you forever. The shades with shimmer look radiant on the clients I’ve used them on. 1-Alive and 3-Possible are my favorites and 6-Glowing is a really nice subtle highlighter.

10 Years Younger Finish Spray: LOVE

Being that Urban Decay’s All Nighter is the only setting spray in my kit, a spray made by Skindinavia, and the ingredient list for this one is identical, I already loved this. It truly works and is worth the 5 seconds it takes to spritz it on for long-lasting makeup.

Enduring Lip Color: LIKE

I’m not a huge liquid lipstick fan but these smell really good, apply smoothly and wear well. They don’t feel nearly as dry as other liquid lipsticks. Creme Brûlée is a really pretty shade that would be flattering on almost anyone. I also love Macaroon for a deeper, mauve nude.

Enduring Lip Liner: MEH

I prefer lip liners that you sharpen, vs. this retractable style as these types can break more easily I find. However, 02 is the perfect beige nude liner if you do a truly nude lip and it applies smoothly and evenly. That being said, they aren’t my favorite formula or packaging format.

Perfect Mascara: LIKE

Turns out, Alcone was the first to do a fiber mascara, before anyone else. Though I’m not necessarily crazy about fiber mascaras, this is the easiest one I’ve tried. It’s one step; the fibers are already infused into the formula. It’s buildable, being one of the few mascaras I own that actually looks better with a 2nd or 3rd coat. It doesn’t get clumpy or spidery. I haven’t had any issues with flaking, smudging or irritation. Though it’s not waterproof, it somehow lasted through an emotional day and sad movie with no running!

Signature Lipgloss: LIKE

My mom helped me solve the mystery of what this smells like. She used to make strawberry mousse and this gloss smells like the packets of strawberry powder. The packaging is super smart with a mirror on the side. The formula is non-sticky. The color Grace is pretty but sheer. It’s nice but not the most amazing lip gloss I’ve ever tried or anything. UPDATE: the shimmery shades smelly like strawberry mousse and the opaque ones more like buttercream. I think the opaque ones smell wonderful.

Perfect Bronzer: MEH I won’t reach for this too much as it’s pretty shimmery. On mature skin, it can enhance texture and pores if not used carefully. It does create a nice glow but I would like it so much better minus the damn shimmer. Younger clients would enjoy it I’m sure.

I’ll review LimeLife by Alcone skincare in a future post and highlight certain products that I find impressive.

Hey! I own the big concealer kit by them. I like it but it definitely doesn’t cover everything for me – unless I’m using it wrong? It does crease. My kit doesn’t come with green. It’s an older one with 16 colors. Think I should rebuy it or go with make up forever concealer? I’m 38 with dark under eye and I do TV a lot. You can see pics of me on my Instagram @bluegraygal. Hi Kelly! Wow-not only is your Instagram feed beautiful, but so are YOU! So, you must have the Kroylan Dermacolor 16 color palette? For the under eye are, it can be tricky. I’ve found it works best when applied SUPER sparingly with a synthetic blending brush. I’ve actually been using this brush: Http://bit. ly/2i2iCQ7

On blemishes and other areas of the face, I like to dot it on with my fingers or a brush and then blend out by patting with my finger or a beautyblender.

I’ve been most successful with this concealer when I use far less than I think I should.

For under eye circles, my favorite plan of attack is a color corrector (yellow for red/purple or peach for blue/brown) followed by Urban Decay Naked Skin Complete Coverage Concealer: Http://bit. ly/235f5jv

Ashlyn, I really hate to burst your bubble, but I tested Younique’s foundation called Touch on parchment paper along with Limelight’s & what I seen with my own eye’s was Touch is not even close to being waterproof like Limelight’s is. LL was like water running off a ducks back, a couple swipes & Y was off the paper.

Hello Dear and thank you for the amazing reviews. I have JUST joined Limelight and I have ZERO makeup experience, however, I have been in sales and sales team management for two decades. I wanted to ask you, do you believe one can learn how to do professional makeup, without prior experience?? My own techniques on how to apply makeup to myself has improved as I had different artists apply makeup on me, but I’m still a “baby” when it comes to knowledge of different brush uses, and how to create different effects with contouring, concealer and such. Do you have any tips for me? Does anyone know of makeup lessons in the Dallas area? All input is GREATLY APPRECIATED

I would strongly suggest you read Kevyn Aucoin’s books and look up color theory. I love LimeLight products because I can easily integrate them into my pro kit. I am seriously considering become a rep. I love RCMA and use it in my kit. I think I am hesitant because I left the makeup selling world because I wanted to DO makeup, not SELL makeup. But when my brides ask what I used and how can they achieve the same look, I would love to able to offer them the retail option.

Thank you so much for the time you put into giving this review & your opinions. I am a presenter for Limelight By Alcone & I love getting the perspective of a MUA on the products I represent. I love the comparisons so much. Aside from some of the great pointed you highlighted, one thing that attracted me to LL was that (we) aren’t spammy robots like some other brands (or at least we aren’t supposed to be – there’s always those you can’t get through to). I want to take care of my customers & provide the products that will work the best for them. If it isn’t ours, so be it. I don’t want to just be another sell to someone else so I refuse to make my customers feel that way. Hi Nell! Thanks for reading and great question! I use it on all my clients, regardless of age and I always love the results. It is wax-based, allowing it to not settle into fine lines and it truly looks and photographs like skin, not makeup. Let me know if you have any other questions because it’s the only foundation I’ve used in my kit the past 4 1/2 years!

I was so sad to read current Limelight website ingredients for foundation included BHT and paraben 🙁 Please tell me I am misreading something or they are planning to fix this. (I see the advertisements use the words paraben free “offerings”, etc… which implies the acknowledgement these are still used in some products, e. g. foundation - the one thing I think we all use)

I do like the many before and after photos of people who use Limelight, but I can’t bare to put those two ingredients on my skin. Thank you for any insight!

Hi Marisa! The foundation is the only product that does contain parabens. It is made for LimeLight by a company called RCMA that has been making it for decades. LimeLight has denoted “working on it” next to parabens for this particular product and I hope they can push RCMA to remove them. All other products are paraben free. Thank you for sharing your concerns. It’s definitely and important topic.

Depending on your skin tone, and either myself or your friend could help you figure that out, you might want #3 which has a peachy undertone that helps neutralize the brown tone. I wear #0 on my under eye and #2 elsewhere. FYI #1 is very yellow/green so better for redness. As for how to apply, you can use your finger or a synthetic brush but just remember to pat, not rub. Also, this product is the best example of less is more. The most minuscule amount goes a long way so start tiny!

Hi Jennie! I actually have quite large pores, especially on my cheeks. Think orange peel! When applied in a pressing motion with a damp sponge or a buffing brush and then set with a translucent setting powder in a pressing motion, I find you can totally minimize pores. Hi. I love the post you did for LL. I have just started using the products and so far love them! However, I thought EVERYTHING WAS paraban free and now reading the foundation isn’t has me concerned. I was even thinking about signing up as a beauty guide as I love they are Leeping Bunny approved, but now I’m uncertain what to do. Yikes! Do you have any idea if they will be taking the paraben out and when?

You are correct; every LimeLight product is paraben-free except the botanical foundation. I also wish it didn’t have them! It’s made by makeup artist industry brand RCMA, and it’s basically an old school formula that’s been around since 1963. While I would prefer it not have parabens too, I have learned one thing that makes me feel a bit better. Because it’s a wax-based formula, it’s designed to sit on top of the skin, vs. absorb. Skincare absorbs into your bloodstream quickly but I’ve been told that this foundation does not. That being said, I totally get your concerns. I am hopeful that RCMA will remove the parabens eventually, at LimeLight’s urging. Thank you again!

Hi I m over 60w/lines eyes around some check bones some lines under eyes not much but light to cool tones they say had =had make up done in some well known malls you name it I tried it light there is nice but never ever do they really match either a light too orange base or too washed out =or to bright blush so see I like the look on a video yes but you guys do this every day and use this and that =I want make up eye stuff no liner but under eye shadow yes lip yes the rest no idea how to use please get back to me love watching Jackie ross every night

So many eyeshadows make my eyes itch or water. Sometimes, I can apply them and wear them all day. Once I remove the shadow, my eyes will itch and water for two or three days. Someone told me that it might be the dyes in the shadows. I was also told that whatever is in red dyes (crushed shellfish possibly?) could be the culprit. Anyway, in your dealings with Limelight shadows, have you found clients to have problems with itchy eyes? Or, have you had someone who has never been able to wear shadows finally able to wear Limelight shadows without problems?

Hi Melanie! Thanks for reading and commenting. I know some do have issues with the red dyes found in pink and purple shadows and I’ve actually found that to be carmine, derived from crushed up beetles. It can be found listed in the ingredients under the following names: carmine, crimson lake, natural red #4, C. I. 75470 and E120. Some of the LimeLight shadows do contain carmine thus are not considered vegan and could potentially irritate. Carmine is listed as the second to last ingredient, meaning that there is a small amount of it but it is present. This has me thinking and I now want to find out which colors have it and which do not! I assume it’s the more pink shades as LimeLight doesn’t even have a purple right now.

Hi there! I stumbled across your review tonight - I did Makeup prior to having kids and worked for a few companies that I love but I’ve since stopped using most things due to sensitive skin and breakouts and seeming to have reactions to so many.

Does the foundation tend to cause breakouts since the wax in it? I’m so tempted to try this but so nervous.

How do you like the translucent powder?

What I can share about that is that on a LimeLight product ingredient chart, where it once said “working on it” under the paraben-free column, it now says “soon to be” so I’m hopeful! Hi Jessica! Good question and I’ll answer as honestly and completely as I can for you! So yes, it is the same formula. Why bother buying the LimeLight one then eh? So I will say, for personal use, I do prefer the LimeLight packaging for a few reasons. I find it easier to swirl a brush or sponge in it and I like that it’s magnetic so you can build a custom palette if you like doing that. Since I retail LimeLight but I’m a makeup artist too, I truly feel like I can match someone’s shade better than most. However, all that being said, if you already have your shade and you need to save some cash money, I feel you and you go on and do that thing! Do you think the Fenty blotting powder would work as a setting powder over the botanical foundation? I ran out and bought the fenty foundation and powder when it launched like everyone else and the foundation just does not work for me but too late to return and I’d like to try to use the blotting powder if i could. I’m in love with my limelight though! My skin is normal to dry though…

Hi Frankie! You can use whatever powder you’d like! I often use different translucent ones. I’d go for it with your Fenty. I have dry skin too. The struggles.

Did you happen to use any of the Limelight brushes? They sell a set of 15 makeup brushes for $280 dollars. I’m wondering if it’s a good investment.

Hey! I just stumbled on your page and want to say thank you for all this info. I have been a pro makeup artist for the last 5 years and have finally decided I need to start selling something to make some extra cash (also a former Sephora girl who felt weird about being pushy to make people buy because my clients trust me!!)

This seemed to be the top brand you recommeneded. Have you had good success at using these on clients and shifting that into selling it to them? I’m a little nervous about starting that conversation with my clients. I would love to chat more!
