Get Rid Of Cleavage Lines With This Expert Advice
Ever sleep on your side all night and wake up to some newfound lines in between your boobs or on your décolletage? Same. And while we would prefer any and all creases to be left on our pillowcases, not our skin, they happen to the best of us. After all, wrinkles and cleavage lines are no big deal and all just part of the aging process, but if like us you’d rather keep them away for as long as possible, then we’re giving you all the info you need to fend them off.
“Just like on our faces, our chests start to show the same signs of aging due to a decrease in collagen production,” explains Dr. Deanne Mraz Robinson, board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, Connecticut. “Think of your skin as an elastic band – when you stretch it, it bounces back, but if you keep stretching it over time, it will start to lose its snap-back and that can exacerbate cleavage lines.”
Well great. So what’s one to do when you’re trying to keep neck and cleavage lines at bay? Turn to SPF and retinol, apparently. “I tell my patients to apply their retinol to their necks and chests since retinol increases skin cell turnover rate, revealing new healthy skin cells and it sheds the damaged ones,” says Mraz Robinson. “Another preventative approach is with sun protection; use a broad spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) daily.”
As for treatments to help minimize deep-set wrinkles in this area, Joie Tavernise, celebrity esthetician and founder of JTAV Clinical Skincare in NYC, prefers NuEra Tight. “In my office, we love the NuEra tight treatment, which is a temperature-controlled radio frequency (RF) skin smoothing system with the power to redefine, revive, and uplift your face and body,” she says. “And since NuEra treats a variety of conditions (both superficial and deep), we can target skin laxity and a crepe-like appearance on the neck and décolletage.”
If you’re seeing the early stages of chest tracks (or want to keep already formed ones from progressing), consider more cleavage line cure-alls:
SiO SkinPad, $30
SiO is a pioneer in the silicone wound-healing technology space and these adhesive little miracle workers really are pros at reversing all sorts of unwanted indentations. Their super-thin SkinPad hydrates and plumps overnight while gently compressing décolleté wrinkles – thanks to a moisture-intensive “microclimate” – and the best part is, each patch can be reused 15 times.
Paula’s Choice RESIST Retinol Skin-Smoothing Body Treatment, $30
We all know retinol is the holy grail of anti-aging skincare products, so coming across this body-specific lotion containing the potent stuff is like Beyoncé asking us to hang out for the day. Firmer, softer, line-free skin can be yours with regular application.
Joovv Go Red Light Therapy Device, $292
As the FDA-cleared, medical-grade, at-home light therapy system, we’re pretty pumped about this one. Red light wavelengths can improve joint pain and benefit seasonal affective disorder, but more importantly, they stimulate fibroblast cells to produce more collagen and smooth wrinkles. AKA perfect for tightening up a crepey cleavage situation. PS – they also offer full-sized, modular devices if you want to create an entire light therapy shrine in your pad.
HydroPeptide Firm-A-Fix Nectar Lifting Neck & Décolleté Serum, $120
A travel-friendly gel-serum that tones and sculpts the neck and décolletage using anti-gravity, anti-wrinkle, and collagen-boosting peptides? Sign us up. An antioxidant blend also fades sun damage and dark spots while protecting against free radicals that cause skin aging so a win-win if you ask us.
We also think using a 0.5 derma-roller on neck lines and cleavage lines (once weekly) before product application is another great way to help improve collagen and fend off fine lines. Derma-rollers create small abrasions in the skin, which causes your dermis to react with a rush of collagen to repair the area, thereby improving the appearance of lines and scars. Check out our guide to using a derma-roller here.
