Hi everyone! Today’s post is all about Sunscreens and the different options available in the Indian market. The suns rays can cause a lot of Visible and invisible damage to the skin. The visible spectrum i. e UVB rays cause Burning that shows itself in the form of tanning and sunburn. The invisible spectrum containing the UVA rays causes Ageing by facilitating free radical chain reactions and breakdown of collagen. To protect our skin sufficiently from the sun’s harmful rays, we need a sunscreen that has Broad spectrum protection i. e protection from UVA (mentioned as PA+++ on the packaging) and from UVB rays as well (mentioned as SPFxx, where xx is a number).

The number that follows the SPF basically helps you determine the duration for which the sunscreen protects your skin. For Indian skin, we can assume a factor of 8 and multiply it with the SPF number to get an estimate of the minutes of sun protection. So an SPF30 sunscreen gives about 8×30 = 240 minutes i. e. 4 hours of sun protection. If you’re going to be in the sun for a long time, make sure to go for a high SPF sunscreen that contains adequate PA protection as well.

Apart from the protection factor, we need to choose a sunscreen that has a Consistency suited for one’s skin type. If you have dry skin, a hydrating cream or lotion would work well for you, while oilier skinned people need to go for lighter textures like gels or mattifying lotions. This is a really important factor because if the sunscreen doesn’t suit your skin type and doesn’t feel good to use, you would inevitably skip this very important step in your skincare routine! So do pay attention to the consistency and texture while choosing a sun protection product. Now lets talk about some of the sunscreens currently available in the Indian market.
